Skype for PS Vita released, one-ups Windows Phone version

Just days after Windows Phone users got their on the job a non-beta Skype app, they have arrived for PS Vita owners, too. As well as in what must come as an unpleasant shock to the WinPho crowd, Skype to the PS Vita can actually run without anyone’s knowledge.

Yes, it is possible to play Lego Batman 2 and Skype will camp out quietly and listen for incoming calls and messages. If someone else rings while you’re beating crooks into bricks, an alert pop-up appears on your screen and you will tap the PS button to respond to. Skype for PS Vita also enables you to make voice calls to your standard phone – provided that you’re a subscriber or have Skype credit in your account to hide it, naturally.

Both the front and rear cameras are supported, too, so you can flip the vista around and take your mates on the virtual tour of the new apartment just like Fatal1ty does in the official demo video.

You’d feel that the modern Skype app for Windows Phone could be no less than as full-featured since Microsoft owns the company now. Did Sony really do a more satisfactory job of implementing multitasking support than Microsoft did? Or was it just easier for your Skype team to take advantage of the Vita’s backgrounding features? In any case might be, the fact remains that Microsoft’s own full-featured mobile OS isn’t even comparable to the main one offered on a competitor’s portable gaming platform.

But hey, eventually your Vita-toting friends will be able to talk with from the comfort of your couch – once Skype for your Xbox 360 arrives.
